What is Horror?

Horror is a genre of literature, film, and television that is meant to scare, startle, shock, and even repulse audiences. The key focus of a horror novel, horror film, or horror TV show is to elicit a sense of dread in the reader through frightening images, themes, and situations.

Why do we like to be scared?

Human seek out thrills and horrors to spice up life.

Why do human like to be scared? Why do we seek out thrills and chills through horror movies, TV shows, and literature? Though not much research has been done, what has been done has shown that humans like the idea of the unknown. It is why we seek out the horror films and go to Haunted Houses and why there is so much celebration behind Halloween. Humans also demand a sense of control, engaging with horror can give people a sense of control over their fears. By exposing themselves to scary situations, they may feel more prepared to handle similar life situations. 

Frankenstein is a frame story written in epistolary form. Set in the 18th century, it documents a fictional correspondence between Captain Robert Walton and his sister, Margaret Walton Saville. Robert Walton is a failed writer who sets out to explore the North Pole in hopes of expanding scientific knowledge. After departing from Archangel, the ship is trapped by pack ice on the journey across the Arctic Ocean. During this time, the crew spots a dog sled driven by a gigantic figure

 An 1896 science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells. The text of the novel is the narration of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man rescued by a passing boat. He is left on the island home of Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist who creates human-like hybrid beings from animals via vivisection. The novel deals with a number of themes, including pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity, human interference with nature, and the effects of trauma.[2] Wells described it as "an exercise in youthful blasphemy."[3]

1886 Gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. It follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London-based legal practitioner who investigates a series of strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde.

A science-fiction novel by H.G. Wells, published in 1897. The story concerns the life and death of a scientist named Griffin, who has gone mad. Having learned how to make himself invisible, Griffin begins to use his invisibility for nefarious purposes, including murder. When he is finally killed, his body becomes visible again.

Below, you will find some different types of horror tropes that can be found in movies, television, and books, just to name a few. Horror allows people to temporarily escape from the stresses and monotony of everyday life; it offers a break from reality, albeit in a dark and thrilling way. 

GORE HORROR

Gore horror is known for it's graphic imagery and scenes featuring intense violence. These types of horror tend to stick with people long after they watch them. 

PHSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR

Psychological horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that focuses on creating a sense of fear and unease through psychological elements rather than relying solely on graphic violence or jump scares.

THRILLER HORROR

A thriller is a genre of fiction characterized by suspense, excitement, tension, and anticipation. Thrillers often involve high stakes, dangerous situations, and a sense of urgency that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

REAL LIFE HORROR

Real-life horror is just what it seems. The real terrors that haunt our everyday nightmares. Below are a few examples of the real-life horrors plaguing our societies.
